Diversity & Inclusion

Welcome From Our Diversity Officer

I am thrilled that you are considering the Brown University Med-Peds Program for your residency training. The program has a long history of fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for residents. We understand that diversity gives all healthcare providers the opportunity to explore different cultures, which enriches the educational experience and, more importantly, provides a framework for each resident physician to better understand their patients and provide excellent patient care.

The Departments of Pediatrics and Medicine at The Warren Alpert Medical School at Brown University are committed to building diverse and inclusive residency Programs. As you research residency programs, I invite you to learn about the culture of Providence and greater Rhode Island. Rhode Island is much more than the home of outstanding universities and wonderful beaches. The City of Providence is racially, ethnically, socioeconomically, and spiritually diverse.

The Brown Med-Peds Residency Program is proud to partner with the Brown Minority Housestaff Association (BMHA), the Brown Sexual and Gender Minority Association (BSGMA), and Brown University’s Office of Belonging, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (OBEDI).

Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have about Providence or our residency program.

Sabina D. Holland, MD
Diversity Officer for the Department of Pediatrics

Initiatives

BMHA

The Brown Minority Housestaff Association (BMHA) offers programs and resources to support housestaff through mentorship, networking, and advocacy.  BMHA provides opportunities to explore issues related to the experiences of housestaff and faculty from backgrounds underrepresented in medicine with the goals of building community within Brown, fostering the development of professional and social connections that will increase retention, and using the strength of a diverse workforce to more effectively meet the needs of a diverse population. Housestaff from all backgrounds are welcome to join.

Brown Minority Housestaff Association

BSGMA

The Brown Sexual and Gender Minority Alliance (BSGMA) is an organization devoted to education, advocacy, and support for sexual and gender minority trainees and faculty affiliated with the The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Membership is open to any and all trainees, faculty, and students regardless of identity or orientation.

BASCE Fellowship

The Brown Advocates for Social Change and Equity (BASCE) fellowship seeks to develop health care leaders who have a passion for engaging their peers in dialogue around issues of racism, cultural diversity, inclusion, social justice, and health equity. The program builds a community of medical students, residents, and faculty who have been trained to facilitate cross-cultural activities and dialogues on race, unconscious bias, and health equity within our peer community and respective health care systems. The sessions focus on critical thinking and dialogue, mentoring, and active workshopping of a project. Brown Advocates for Social Change and Equity

Visiting Student Scholarship

The Visiting Student Scholarship is a program co-sponsored by the Office of Belonging, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion and The Warren Alpert Medical School at Brown University. This program is an opportunity for qualified fourth-year medical students with a demonstrated interest in health equity and inclusive clinical learning environments to participate in clinical electives offered by The Warren Alpert Medical School at Brown University.

Virtual Second Look

Every year, students who self-identify as underrepresented in medicine are invited to participate in the annual Brown Minority Housestaff Association’s Second Look, a virtual event held after interview season is over and a wonderful opportunity to connect with Brown residents and faculty.
